The Great Pyrenees is a dog that was developed in the Pyrenean Mountains on the French-Spanish border.  The Pyr was brought to Spain by the Romans, where it was left to work in the mountains.  The main task of the Great Pyrenees was the guarding of sheep from predators such as wolves and bear.  The pyr was also used as a guard dog for protecting fortresses during the Middle Ages.  During the 18th century, the Dauphin of France was so impressed with the breed that he took some pups home to France with him.  It was then that the Great Pyrenees became the official dog of the court of Louis XIV.  The breed was not introduced to the United States until the 1930's.

The pyr is a natural guard dog from its days spent in the mountains, yet is very gentle and docile with those it knows.  It is a serious dog that requires lots of outdoor activity.  Males run from 27-32 inches at the shoulders, and females will be slightly smaller.  Generally, pyrs will tend to be in the 90-125lb. range.  The coat is made up of two layers in order to withstand the severity of winter.  The outer coat is long, flat, thick and coarse, used as waterproofing.  The undercoat is fine yet heavy and is used as an insulator.
The pyr should be all white, or white with markings of either black, grey or tan. Grooming of the Pyr is minimal as they blow their coat completely twice a year.  However, regular brushing to remove the dead undercoat is essential.
